When someone asks you to host an event, do you freeze, feel a twinge of annoyance, or feel your heartbeat spike? LOL, I get it! The thought of hosting can be overwhelming, but I’m here to ease your mind. At its core, hosting is about bringing people together. Think of it as being a conduit for great experiences with great people—it doesn’t have to be perfect, just meaningful.

With over 20 years of planning everything from small gatherings to grand corporate events, I’ve picked up a few hosting tricks (and learned from my own mistakes). So, think of me as your hosting mentor! Whether you’re planning an intimate hangout with friends or a lavish dinner party, here are my five stress-free hosting tips to bring out your inner “hostess with the mostess.”

Plan Ahead

It’s never too early to start preparing for your event! Ideally, you should begin 3–4 months in advance for larger gatherings, especially during busy times like the holiday season. Early planning means less stress when it comes to booking vendors, ordering decor, and finalizing details. Even for smaller gatherings, giving yourself a couple of weeks to plan allows for a smoother, more enjoyable hosting experience.

Keep It Curated

Curation doesn’t have to break the bank or be overly complicated, but it must be thoughtful. Consider your guests—what are their likes, dislikes, or shared interests? Create an environment that feels inviting and personal, whether that’s with a customized playlist, themed decor, or a special activity. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about creating a space where people feel comfortable and connected.

Taste Test

If your event includes food, always taste-test the menu in advance to make sure everything aligns with your vision and quality standards. This ensures the dishes match the vibe of your event and taste as good as they look. And don’t forget to check with your guests about any allergies or dietary restrictions ahead of time! Share this information with your chef or restaurant, or prepare alternative menu items if you’re cooking at home. Your guests will appreciate the extra effort.

Create a Focal Point

Every great event has a memorable centerpiece—whether it’s a stunning floral arrangement, a beautifully set table, or a signature cocktail that gets everyone talking. A focal point draws attention, sparks conversation, and elevates your event without requiring too much effort. Choose something that aligns with your theme and sets the tone for the gathering.

Embrace the Unexpected

No matter how much you plan, something will go sideways—and that’s okay! A relaxed and flexible host sets the tone for the entire event. If a dish burns or a guest spills wine, laugh it off and roll with it. Your guests will remember how they felt at your event, not the minor hiccups. Hosting is about creating joy and connection, not achieving perfection.

Trust the Process and Have Fun!

Hosting doesn’t have to be a source of stress. With a little preparation, a dash of creativity, and a willingness to go with the flow, you can throw events that are not only memorable but also fun to plan. Now go on—bring out that hostess with the mostess and make some magic happen!
